What is Facelift?

Also referred to as Rhytidectomy, a facelift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims at imparting a youthful appearance to one’s face. The surgeon mainly emphasizes on reshaping the lower half of the face. It involves removal of excess facial skin. When compared to other processes such as injecting fillers, the results last anywhere between 8 months and 2 years.


 

A Facelift Addresses the Following:

- Jowls on the jawline
- Double chin
- Loose skin on neck
- Nasolabial folds (occurring between the nose and mouth)
- Drooping of midface

The Right Candidate

Before conducting surgery, cosmetic surgeons will assess medical history of patient. He will typically assess the following:

- Drug use
- Smoking
- Blood pressure
- Blood clotting
- Medications (prescription and non-prescription)
- Allergies
- Scarring
- Skin condition

The Benefits

A facelift will create a smoother, youthful appearance. It will reduce/remove sagging and tightens skin.

Risks/Disadvantages

- The surgery does not last forever. According to a research, it is revealed that around 21% of facelifts relapse after five and a half years. However, it is also revealed that around 76% of individuals managed to look younger after this time period.
- Men may not be able to achieve natural appearance after a facelift as they have sideburns (hair in front of their ears). Pulling it backwards or upward may look odd.
- Distorted earlobes are a common risk among men and women.
- In many cases, individuals may need additional procedures, such as eyelid surgery, neck lift, forehead lift, liposuction, chemical peels, fat injection, removal of cheek fat, brow lift, cheek/chin implants etc.

Recovery

It is common for patients to face some discomfort but medication can relieve it. Swelling and bruising may become worse 2 days after surgery. This may continue for a few days. Complete recovery may take around 14 days. Most patients can resume work and rigorous activities after 4 weeks.
